Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a speech language pathologist at a full service community school in Holyoke, MA. I create activities that develop the language abilities of students so that they can access their classroom curriculum. My students live in a low-income area where their families have difficulties finding a secure home and employment. These factors often have a negative impact on a student's language learning. Their difficulties with speech and language can be exacerbated by lack of access and exposure to language enriching environments and activities (ex. toys for pretend play).
My students inspire me to be creative, compassionate, and resilient each and every day.
They are always eager to learn and each one is a creative and diverse thinker. My students are always excited to use new materials and participate in new activities.
My Project
These materials will help develop my students' language abilities through play and structured practice. The food and prepositional manipulatives will give my preschool and kindergarten students the chance to learn foundations of language through fun and interactive play. The sequencing cards and reading comprehension kits will help my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students practice reading for meaning and telling stories.
My goal is to give my students opportunities to boost their language abilities in interactive and fun ways.
Having new materials will excite my student and motivate them to participate in the speech therapy lessons. Making activities engaging with interesting materials encourages students to apply their newly learned language abilities outside of the speech room.
