Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
True resilience is the best way to describe our students at our Middle School. Most of my students live in a community with limited resources and limited ways to acquire what they need to be successful. Over eighty percent of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes and almost sixty percent are identified at-risk. Over thirty-five percent of our students qualify to receive accommodations that will ensure their academic success. This includes a learning environment that provides the use of modeling and visual aids. My students are motivated to take ownership of their learning when they can immerse themselves into an environment infused with technology. Unfortunately, my students have expressed that making these connections can be hard without the proper resources available to them. My students deserve a classroom that can provide at least the basic technology to provide relevant learning. When we give students opportunities like presenting their work, explaining their thought process to the class or even teaching a concept to other students, we have created an environment of learning at the highest level.
My Project
Help me to give my students a classroom that encourages daily use of technology in my teaching and by my students. Our district suffered great structural damage during hurricane Harvey last year. Any funds to purchase basic minimum technology for classrooms are just not available. Classrooms currently lack basic projectors and document cameras to give students any sort of innovative learning opportunities. These visual lessons that engage the whole student are critical to our student progress goals. Being able to project work and show examples live to the whole class makes the learning more meaningful. Visually modeling lessons often clarifies misconceptions for most students. Having a project and document camera for classroom will aid in just that and allow the all students to be a part of the lesson as well. It is difficult to have multiple students in one classroom on the same page when it comes to teaching and involving technological exposure without a projector and document camera. By revolutionizing lessons and allowing students to use technology, I will highly increase authentic student engagement. This will lead to higher comprehension, greater retention levels and meaningful relevant learning.
