I work in an open space concept school teaching 4th and 5th grade. My students come from a very diverse background. We have a large percentage of students that participate in the free and reduced lunch program. We are in a military community and serve many Ft. Sill military families. Many of these students have attended several elementary schools due to the relocation of military families.
My students thrive on repetition and structure in my classroom.
I am the primary math teacher for approximately 86 fourth and fifth graders. I also teacher fourth grade science and social studies. I work with about 25 students on Individual Education Plans. My focus is to meet each student's diverse educational needs. My class also consists of 14 students on Academic Progress Plans for reading. These students fall below the state required scores for reading success. With such a diverse group of students, my job is to make each student successful regardless of ability or outside factors that might influence their educational success.
My Project
Having worked with fourth and fifth grade students for 26 years, I have used repetition and structure to increase my students' abilities to be successful. My biggest obstacle is having a limited number of computers available for my students. By adding computers to my classroom more of my students will have access to programs and opportunities to interact with technology on a more consisitant basis.
With a balanced educational program of instruction, technology and life experiences -Success Happens.
Having used several repetition based software programs and allowing students to interact with technology through our STEM program, many of my under acheiving students have been more successful. This kind of success will only increase if more students have access to technology.
