My students are the reason I show up to work each day. They make me laugh, cry (mostly happy tears), and boost my confidence as an educator with simple hand made messages. They confide in me and trust me to advocate for them. They depend on me. They motivate me to be the best version of myself.
They come from all around the globe, from diverse backgrounds and with different languages, but their common thread is learning English-together.
Their families have had to make sacrifices for them to come to this country and even more sacrifices for them to stay. Most of my students have had to pass on activities or things that are extra expenses for their parents, but many kids around them have. Never once have they complained or been sour about not having the same material things their peers do. Nevertheless, these students demonstrate a will to learn, respect, cooperation and caring than my students. I cannot think of a group of kids more deserving than mine!
My Project
As I'm sure it is more common than not these days, my school district has been shut down due to the COVID-19 Outbreak Crisis. School that serves as a safe space, a guarantee for food, a social environment, a loving and nurturing environment, a place for opportunity and growth is already out of reach for students for an unknown amount of time. This is an adjustment parents, students, teachers and staff are being forced to enter an unfamiliar territory.
While all teachers are doing their best to support students from afar, many students are having to make sacrifices they had no way to prepare for.
During our unfortunate school closure to combat the spread of the Coronavirus, we will be implementing a remote teaching and learning plan. Students will be able to access online learning platforms, interactive lessons, and live meets with their teachers and classmates, video learning, and be able to create unique responses through video, audio, images, etc through the use of Google classroom and the Google Education Suite. While some students have been fortunate enough to borrow devices, or are able to access this through their phone, 3+ months of learning and demonstrating knowledge through a phone is hardly ideal. The use of Chromebooks would be able to optimize the learning experiences for students during an already challenging time. Please help me support student learning and successes through supporting this project to give 5 Chromebooks to students in need.
