Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our class is a lively action packed learning environment! We are chanting and singing to aid our comprehension and retention of content.
It is a very hands-on classroom, that is so fortunate to include 2 adults most of the time throughout the day!
My students are five and six year olds, mostly English Language Learners.
This is the first classroom experience for most of my incoming students. Our tight knit urban community does not have many options for preschool unless a student qualifies by having special needs. Our school continues through 8th grade, so we have unique opportunities to work in the same building with a student and their siblings for up to 9 years, kindergarten through 8th grade. We have 3 classes per grade level so all students are known by name by the majority of the staff, from classified to administration.
Our size ensures accountability for students and staff. We all work hard and have earned awards the last 4 years from the state to prove it!
My Project
Students will sit at this table and be able to have their needs met with ease from an educator. If it includes hand over hand writing, assistance touching and moving each item as one-to-one correspondence for counting is practiced or help tracking the letters or print during early reading, all tasks will be within reach for this small group of students.
Currently we work on the floor, or at other tables such as a circle or long rectangle that keeps students waiting as a teacher has to continuously hop up and re-orient to help students other than the two that are directly on either side.
Donations to this piece of furniture for our classroom will improve the assistance provided to each student and increase the amount of time each student gets individualized help.
Kindergarten students will benefit for years to come!
