Succeeding With Sensory Items

My students need sensory items like crash pads, therapy swings and weighted blankets to help them satisfy sensory needs when they start to become frustrated.

My Students

I teach 1st-4th grade students with emotional disturbances. I have only been with my students for a few short months and in that time we have been able to establish a very caring classroom community. Along with teaching my students academics, I also teach them how to self-regulate their emotions. We are not just working towards being good students, we are working towards being exceptional citizens. My students work very hard to meet their goals and it is a pleasure to watch them grow!

My Project

Some of the items I have selected will help my students by allowing them to satisfy their sensory needs in appropriate ways. I have included a Lycra sensory swing which aids in regulating the sensory system. The Jumbo Crash Pad gives kids a safe and designated area to "crash" into. I believe my students will benefit greatly from having a designated area to let out some steam when they are feeling overwhelmed or frustrated. I also have weighted pellets on my list of items. I plan to use the weighted pellets to create weighted lap pads (similar to a weighted blanket) for my students to use while working or taking breaks. The kinetic and water beads will be used for sensory tubs that students can access at any time.

In addition to the sensory items, I have also included some instructional items that I believe will make my students enjoy learning.

One of the biggest causes of escalations among my students is frustration with academics. I have several different Osmo kits on my list that I believe will help spark a joy for learning in my students. Osmo is a hands-on learning "game" that uses an iPad and manipulatives to aid students in exploring subjects in a new way. All of the kits I have on my list apply to learning standards I will be teaching. I plan to use the Osmo kits every day as part of independent learning and also as a part of my reward system for meeting behavior goals.

My goal with all of these items is to reduce behaviors that impede my students learning time so that they have the best chance possible at success.
