Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever had difficulty learning a concept in school? Autistic and learning disabled children face more challenges learning than most students. An iPad and accessories can give them an alternative way to learn. iPads will help them stay engaged in learning and be successful in school.
I teach at a public elementary school with mainly English Language Learners in a high poverty area.
My students have various learning disabilities and a few of them have autism. My students have to work much harder than most but they are extremely willing to learn. It is a joy to watch them progress in their academics. They are motivated to learn through technology. The students in my class have extremely sweet personalities and I do my best to help them understand that they just learn differently from most other students. I am always looking for ways to help build their confidence. Even when new skills are taught, they always try their best. They want to learn just like the other students. My students are eager to learn and willing to work hard to succeed. I encourage my students to focus on their strengths and find ways to work through their weaknesses. They are a great bunch of awesome students.
My Project
I would like 3 iPads with cases and styluses for my special needs students. Many of my students would benefit from an iPad as a tool for writing and reading. Several of my students have fine motor challenges but being able to write with a stylus on an iPad would enable them to be as successful at completing their assignments along with their peers. They have awesome ideas but have difficulty using paper and pencil. Technology for these students is not only motivating but also another avenue for them to be successful. Based on the poverty level of my students, having an opportunity to use an iPad is only something in their dreams. By using an iPad, there are an endless number of iPad apps that would enhance their learning. The children would be exposed to using apps such as books being brought to life and read aloud as well as endless possibilities of educational games. This year I was able to set up a motivating and fun reading corner where they can relax and read their books.
As a teacher I encourage my students to become the best member of society they can be.
My students deserve a chance to learn to their fullest and to achieve their dreams. As an educator and a mom of a learning disabled child, I realize the importance of technology. Technology helped my son graduate with a double major and find a job in the field of technology. He fully supports himself! iPads will help my students be more motivated to continue learning and be prepared for their future!
