Succeeding in Reading!

My students need a rug at the front of our classroom to sit on for whole group reading lessons. They also need book boxes and a fluency kit for small group lessons.

My Students

"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." — Victor Hugo, Les Miserables. A lot of my third graders struggle to read the books that they want to read. They are low in comprehension, decoding, and fluency. They want to be more successful in reading.

My students is a wonderful group of 9 girls and 11 boys.

They work very had everyday to be successful and we live by the quote that we are going to work harder today than we did the day before. Our school is almost 100% free and reduced lunch and there are a lot of students including mine that are a grade level below where they need to be. They are a very happy group of students but they are lacking the fluency and comprehension skills that are necessary to be successful in all areas of the school day.

My Project

I envision using the rug for whole group reading lessons and having the students also use it for independent reading lessons. At this time their books are being stored in their desks. They really struggle with keeping them organized and they are easily ripped. They would like a better way to store them such as book boxes. As far as the fluency kit I envision using it not only one on one with students but also using it in a small group setting. The goal of the fluency kit is to improve how fast and accurate they read. If they do this with a partner they are challenged to do more than the other person and these students are extremely competitive. I envision their reading improving immensely through all of these things!

This donation will help my classroom immensely.

These students are not used to having a lot and they love having the chance to improve and be successful. They will be more comfortable during lessons while sitting on the carpet which will improve their engagement. When they are comfortable and that need is met they can focus more on other things such as learning the new reading strategy. When they improve their fluency their reading level will go up and they can read more books.
