"Is Chicago it's own state?" "What is Japan the capital of?" I work in Englewood, on Chicago's South Side. My fifth graders are some of the most brilliant young leaders the world will ever meet...that is, with some toning up in the geography department. I am their Social Studies teacher and their link to current and historical events. They didn't believe me when I told them that Sean "Puffy" Combs was once busted for using sweatshop labor and very few knew that Africans were kidnapped to be slaves in places other than the U.S. Though curious, opinionated, and eager to learn, my high energy students have had little to no exposure to the news in an accessible form. Scholastic Publishing offers a "newspaper" called Scholastic News. The six page, color publication covers current events, historical events, and geography with articles, games, and debates. For a year's subscription, students will get 24 issues, written at grade level. A class subscription to Scholastic News would be a fun, unintimidating way to make current world politics available to my fifth graders. In addition, we will embrace the art of sharing by letting my other two fifth grade Social Studies classes read the issues as well. All in all, 90+ students would benefit in both non-fiction comprehension and global and political awareness from a class subscription to Scholastic News. Consider this your donation to a future generation of leaders. I guarantee them to be a worthy investment.
