I am a first-grade teacher at a K-3 school in southern Maine. The school that I work at has a diverse community of learners with a wide range of financial security. Located in close proximity to a naval base, we have a large population of military families, so roster changes throughout the school year are frequent. Our school works hard to be a place where the needs of all students are met, and we are invested in helping children to be caring and well-rounded learners.
I love the energy and enthusiasm that each of my first graders brings to our classroom.
Along with that energy comes a unique personality and learning style. I work hard to get to know each of my students and to find different ways to help them do their best learning in my classroom each day.
My Project
When I started teaching first grade, I bought a set of stackable stools to set up at my guided reading table in my classroom. I meet with small groups of students at my work table throughout the day, and the students enjoy utilizing these seats. Unfortunately, the stools that I purchased have not held up well, and are falling apart after less than two years. The seats of the stools had a padded coating that has ripped, and the legs of the stools have bent because they are not well made, and my students sometimes forget that they are sitting on regular stools and not wobble stools!
My current stools need replacing, and these sturdy stools will stand up to years of use by my students during small group work times at my reading table.
I want to continue to offer my students flexible seating options throughout their work day, and these stools will survive regular use by first graders as they visit my table to read.
