Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school in the heart of Houston, Texas. It was built in 1929 and has been deemed part of the Historic Heights, which means everything is original. Original is amazing, but original is also a little ancient. The ceiling of our classroom leaks, but we deal with it like pros. The wood floors are beautiful but are buckling due to the leaks. Honestly though, I can't complain. Having taught at a brand-new school before, I can tell you that the building does not make the school... The people do! I finally feel, after 10 years of teaching, that I have found my forever home.

I am a true believer that all students have a talent, and it is our job as educators to discover it. Our students have inner-city struggles, but they perform like they have no worries in the world. School is a place where they can and will be successful, and a place where people believe in them.
My Project
Right now, I have 25 students in just 1 class! Because of the large number this year, some of my students are sitting on wobbly old stools missing feet or rusted metal folding chairs. We've searched at our district warehouse several times, and they just tell us to keep checking back. It would be great to get a uniform set of stools. My students (those who are easily distracted) would be more focused and all would more comfortable with safe, sturdy stools. The stools that are safe to reuse will be cleaned and donated to other needy teachers for flexible seating options. I am also requesting school supplies (tape, 3-hole punchers, staplers, etc.) for each table in my classroom. Having these supplies readily available will save instructional time and keep the students focused on what's important... learning!!!
