We are a Title I school located in the western panhandle of Florida. My co-teacher and I teach 44 growing fifth graders consisting of both regular and special education students. Our students have a goal of mastering the 5th grade level standards even though many of them are 2 to 3 years below expected level in reading. In order to help the students attain this goal, small group rotations are used to differentiate instruction and provide accommodations to students for them to be successful with the curriculum no matter what their reading level. Our students are smart, clever, and are thriving with the extra attention two teachers utilizing small groups can provide them.
My Project
We are thrilled to be able to hold two small groups at the same time to reinforce concepts being taught during the day. Our problem is that we need to about 7-8 students around a small table and chairs are just too large to accommodate that number of children. This flexible seating option, stools, maximizes instructional time and allows the students to interact together. We do not have to move chairs around and can quickly make flexible groups anywhere in the classroom. We purchased cheaper stools to help our groups to function better, but 5th graders tend to get larger very quickly during the school year. Students also like to wiggle, and it is just a matter of time before a collapse occurs. Ms. C. and I have drilled, used nuts and bolts, and straightened the flimsy legs of our current seating to no avail. We need a more permanent, solid solution.
