Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Criminal Justice to all 11th grade students within the School of Leadership and Public Service at a large comprehensive high school in Long Beach. These students have indicated an interest in pursuing a career in legal services and take classes throughout their high school experience that emphasize this interest.
My students are inquisitive and thoughtful advocates for change.
They absolutely love classroom discussions and engaging in collaborative groups to find solutions to the everyday challenges our society faces within our criminal justice system. My students come to school each day ready to take brave chances in sharing their experiences and opinions of the criminal justice system in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!
Each student in my classroom absolutely loves learning about criminal justice, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. My students are academically, ethnically, and economically diverse. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure each student's needs are met. I truly have a wonderful group of students.
My Project
This school year I was moved into a brand new classroom with air conditioning and a new projection system, but with broken and outdated classroom furniture. Most of the desks in my classroom have broken frames with exposed metal parts that will catch onto clothes or scratch exposed skin. My class thrives on group discussion and collaboration and the current fixed desk setup, with the chair attached to the desk, does not fully support the environment I would like to create due to the hazardous nature in trying to arrange or rearrange desks.
By donating to this project, you will help to ensure that our classroom is conducive to a safe and welcoming learning environment, which will improve and increase student attention, collaboration, focus, and therefore academic achievement.
A flexible seating design will promote independent as well as collaborative, group work and/or discussion, when necessary. Students will be able to safely manuever their desks around the classroom due to the desks being lightweight and the chairs being separate with no cause for concern for exposed metal parts. Additionally, students will feel more comfortable with having their own student chair to be able to pull away or into their student desks. Aside from the students, a new computer chair will allow me to be more comfortable when sitting at my desk grading assignments, planning engaging lessons, or collaborating with colleagues through Zoom.
