Hooray! This project is fully funded

Our Language Arts classroom is a dynamic and diverse one set in majestic Hawai'i. Nonetheless, the resources provided to these 8th grade students - and those which the students themselves can provide - are limited. You see, the particular area in which the school resides is one of the most socio-economically disadvantaged areas of the state. We need your help (yes, YOU!) to invigorate the youth with new and exciting educational opportunities.

So, here's the long and short of it: Students in our classroom are some the brightest and most energized that you'll ever see. Nevertheless, their perspective is a relatively narrow one because of the geographic - and thereby cultural - isolation in which they live. We have worked this year to broaden that worldview through reading materials about non-Polynesian and -American cultures.

However, this year we have not touched on two of the most important world events - World War II and the Holocaust. With literature like Anne Frank's Diary, however, I truly believe that we can help the students develop a more exhaustive understanding of history. Furthermore, the personal nature of the diary will help us not only enrich our understanding of literary devices like voice and style, but also teach us the value of first-person accounts. And what more engaging account than that of a person their own age?

I truly look forward to this Holocaust unit, and I hope that you, too, will see the potential literary, educational, and personal power that a piece like Anne Frank's Diary can possess. All the best!
