My students are from a Title I school in rural Oklahoma where I also grew up. A large percentage of our students live below the poverty level and have rarely experienced the world outside of our local area. They need opportunities to gain new experiences with hands-on learning about the world outside our rural area.
I know they have the desire and ability to learn and grow; they just need the opportunity and the tools.
Exploring ideas in tangible ways is something my students enjoy and have a definite interest in doing. They understand what they need to succeed; they just lack the experience and the tools.
My Project
The materials and supplies I am requesting for my students already have a "home" in my classroom. I just need help maintaining my stock. Consumable items like colored paper, pencils, erasers, and markers are hard to keep supplied. The crafting supplies are used by my students to make projects showing off what they've learned in class.
One of my annual activities is to have the students illustrate the Preamble of the Constitution.
Each student takes a phrase and creates a poster, depicting what the phrase means using words and images. I then hang all the posters in the hallway as part of our Veteran's Day displays. The community always marvels at how well my students express themselves.
Nothing is more disheartening to me than to see a student have big ideas for a project and then find out that I don't have the supplies necessary to complete it. It is even worse when I only have PART of the materials needed available to students. Students need to feel like they can create without being hampered by trying to find the "stuff."
I plan to use the arrowheads, Play-Doh and modeling tools to allow the students to try to recreate the items made and used by the early settlers when we study them as we learn Oklahoma history. Seeing a coil basket and trying to make one are two entirely different experiences! My students deserve to know how their ancestors created the tools they needed to live life.
Lastly, we always need chargers and cables to keep our Chromebooks and tablets ready to use. It may seem like a convenience, but having to keep up with just two charging blocks instead of 2, will save me time and effort that I can instead devote to giving my students authentic learning experiences.
