Welcome to our English Language Arts classroom in Gwinn, MI. Our rural high school is tucked in the pines in the wild, beautiful, and remote Upper Peninsula. Despite challenges our students face with poverty (all are provided free breakfast and lunch), their determination and our dedicated staff have earned our school a bronze medal in national rankings of Best High Schools by U.S. News. Teachers here strive to provide our students with an education that prepares them for productive and fulfilling lives beyond our school walls.
My goal with this project is to help students who are experiencing homelessness get the supplies they need for a great start back to school.
In 2016-17, our building had 22 students reported as homeless. I want to make sure that our students who find themselves surmounting difficult situations don't have to worry about where they will get backpacks.
My Project
Our school is hosting an event called Stuff The Bus, where students can get much needed back-to-school supplies.
I will be volunteering at the event, and I would love to contribute supplies through this project with a focus on helping students who are experiencing homelessness.
The supplies I am requesting include notebooks, folders, calculators, pencils, highlighters, and pencil pouches -- all the academic basics that a scholar would need for a successful year.
Thank you for supporting students who could use a little extra help during this back-to-school season. It truly shows them that their education is important and valued.
