Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world- Nelson Mandela This year, I have the privilege of teaching 93 gifted and talented students on a daily basis. Our focus of study is modern issues in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
My kids are highly motivated, inquisitive, and compassionate.
We spend each day discussing the issues of the world around us. Sometimes we are inspired, and some days we are really frustrated by the inequality we see when it comes to economics and/or politics. Our school is overcrowded and our technology is outdated. There are not enough computers in the building to allow us to research modern world issues on a regular basis.
My Project
Through Donors Choose over the past 2 years, I have been able to get 13 laptops donated for my classroom. By adding 6 Chromebooks to my classroom lab, I will be able to reduce the ratio of students to computers. I will also be able to share the technology with other members of my team, who teach the other core subjects. I envision my students being able to research current modern day issues around the world, as well as being able to access primary source documents in order to understand history. My students love to be able to create presentations to show what they know, either through Power Point or Prezi. I will also be able to differentiate how I assess students. Sometimes, we will work using pen and paper. Other times, my students will be interacting with me online using Edmodo.
In the current digital age, knowing how to navigate the online world is a must.
Having this technology in the classroom will help me teach my students how to navigate this world in a safe environment. Research can be carefully guided within the classroom. We can discuss online etiquette and what is acceptable for classroom submission and use. I will have another mode to prepare my students for the 21st century workforce.
