Indulge our thirst for learning! These water molecule kits will allow us to explore the polarity, hydrogen bonding, surface tension, solubility, states of matter, and crystal structure of the most amazing and important liquid on earth...water!
My students are juniors and seniors at a large public high school in California.
About 87% of my students qualify for the free and reduced price lunch program. While my students families struggle financially, my students are determined to complete the A-G requirements that will enable them to attend a university upon graduation. They also challenge themselves by taking rigorous elective courses like Advanced Placement Biology. They inspire me every day with their hard work and dedication to being successful.
My Project
Water is the most important substance on earth! Without water, life as we know it would not exist. Water is so important that it has a whole chapter dedicated to it in the AP Biology textbook. My students need to understand the complex chemistry of water which is responsible for it's amazing abilities. These magnetic water molecule kits will allow my students to manipulate water molecules to observe hydrogen bonding which contributes to the properties of water such as cohesion, adhesion, surface tension and high heat of vaporization. They will also be able to observe how a hydration shell forms around a salt molecule in order to dissolve the salt.
These materials will be invaluable to teaching my students about the complexities of water.
The ability to hold the molecule models in their hands and create the hydrogen bonds between the oxygen atoms and the hydrogen atoms will assure that they remember how important this molecule is to the continuation of life. The knowledge my students will gain from this experience will help them on the AP exam that they take at the end of the year and as they move on to the challenges of college.
