Hooray! This project is fully funded

Having had success in using birds to investigate our state's natural resources last year, I would like to expand this expedition in the 2005-2006 school year. This year, by joining Cornell University's Classroom FeederWatch (, my fourth graders would be able to access data from all over the country and compare it to their own to apply the scientific method, data analysis and graphing skills, and learn more about their local ecosystem. Our class has developed good relationships with the Elisha Mitchell chapter of the Audubon Society and the biology department of Asheville High School. They provided us with speakers and opportunities for field trips to a local wetlands and national parks. The students became experienced in hiking, using binoculars and learned techniques used to conduct bird counts. Through this expedition, they also learned about the biome and ecosystem we share with North Carolina's birds. Soon the students were avid bird watchers themselves and created sketches, models, and presentations on birds for a class exhibition. We make our own bird feeders as part of this project, using them to attract birds for observation in the fall and through the winter. By the spring, the children should be so invested in their backyard birds that they will be selecting a service project to help the local avian population. I will be steering them toward adding nesting boxes the Transcontinental Bluebird Trail sponsored by the North American Bluebird Society. We plan to place them in the yards of elderly folks and daycares in our neighborhood. Thank you for your consideration and for supporting America's children.
