It is important to me that students learn biology, not as an isolated set of facts, but as something that can inform, and improve, their everyday lives.
My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, but all have in common a desire to excel.
Instead of attending their local high school with their friends, they have applied, and been accepted, to a program that allows them to dual enroll in high school and college classes. They come in knowing that they will work significantly harder than their peers at other schools, but leave significantly more prepared for their adult lives.
My Project
The materials requested will support my students in learning about cells. Beyond simply memorizing cell parts and making microscope slides, they will study the transmission of bacteria by swabbing locations of their choice throughout the school and culturing the bacteria they collect. They will also participate in a germ transmission simulation that uses Glo Germ to show how germs can pass by something as simple as a handshake.
Thanks to your donation, students will be able to learn about cells in a way that applies to their everyday lives, especially during cold and flu season!
They will also have learned lab techniques and used materials that most of their peers will not encounter until college. And, they will get to see science as fun, active, and hands-on.
