Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
No one has ever taught my students how to study for a test, outline an essay or take notes. This lack of study skills holds them back in school and jeopardizes chances of attending college. Our class aims to change that this year.
I teach at a Title 1 inner city school in Texas.
84% of our students are Hispanic, and 77% are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Most of my students are recent immigrants and many of them have never even considered college, primarily because they don't know anyone who has attended. I want to make graduating high school and attending a 4 year university a reality for my 140 students.
The best way to make that goal a reality is to provide my students with the study skills that will enable them to succeed in their future academic pursuits. Without the benefit of these skills, to say nothing of a knowledge of history, my students will be at a disadvantage not only on standardized tests, but also upon applying to jobs and college.
My Project
Every day before school I distill the information we will be covering into 2 to 3 "Key Points" which I write on the whiteboard. For example, "House of Burgesses: First example of representative government in America". We open the class by reading the Key Points out loud, anchoring students before the lesson begins. My students really connect with the Key Points – competition to be the volunteer who reads them out to the class is fierce.
I will capitalize on this success by having students write the key points on flash cards at the beginning of the period. Students can then carry these around and review them whenever they have a spare minute (because the cards are on metal spirals they’re unlikely to be lost). This will accomplish two objectives. First, students will retain more information; that foundation of knowledge will allow us to approach U.S. History at a higher level. Second, students will gain study skills that will set them up for success in high school and college.
Being able to absorb, retain and apply information is essential to academic success.
At present, my students lack the study skills necessary for them to fully succeed in doing this. Something as simple as providing them flash cards will enable them to succeed in mastering U.S. History and helping develop the study skills they will need to succeed in the future.
