Help me give my students reading tools, such as tactile letters and numbers, foam to create words, and page overlays, pointers, and to help with dyslexia.
I teach in a special education classroom in a rural area in the heart of Indiana. My students love learning, but sometimes learning looks a little different in our classroom. We use sensory tools to provide tactile and kinesthetic stimulation when paper and pencil just isn't meeting our needs. Increasing visual aides is also very helpful to our students as we are discovering the world around us. Meeting students where they are academically and emotionally becomes the top priority in our classroom.
My Project
Our school is moving forward with a dyslexia initiative. We hope to provide our students with the best research related tools to help them make drastic gains in their reading ability. Specifically, research shows that students learn best through multi-sensory tools including tracing letters with sandpaper, forming letters and words using 3d foam that they can see and feel as well as gel packs that allow them to do the same, and placing specific emphasis on lines and words using page overlays. All of these tools reflect a strong research based foundation for reading for all students with dyslexia and other reading disabilities.
