Students With Autism Needs Reading and Social Skills Books!
My students need books to help them learn social skills that target self-regulation, how to handle bullying, and flexible thinking; additionally, reading comprehension skills books such as character traits, sequencing, plot, and problem and solution.
I am a teacher of wonderful students with disabilities in a self-contained classroom setting with grades K-5. The majority of my students fall within the range of the autism spectrum disorder, but we also have students with emotional disorders and intellectual disabilities.
My students are absolutely amazing, unique, and inspiring beings.
They are kind, funny, sweet, and generous! They are eager to learn, to do well, and to please others around them. They work extremely hard if not harder than any other students I know. On a daily basis, they overcome so many challenges that as part of their disabilities. They perceive and process the world differently which at times make it hard for them to function without the manifestation of meltdowns. But those challenges do not stop them from being strong and being who they are.
Their disability does not define who they are. My students are warriors with incredible mental strength and I admire them. They inspire me every day to be the best teacher that I can be. Our school is eligible for Title I and most of our student population receive free-reduced breakfast/lunch.
My Project
My students with disabilities experience social skills deficits which is why we are asking for books like Wonder, Enemy Pie and The Rainbow Fish that will target specific social skills topics such as self-regulation, flexible thinking. mindfulness, and bullying. We also chose books which will help my students strengthen their reading comprehension skills such as identifying plot, character traits, sequencing, and problem and solution. My students are especially a fan of the book series titled "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed...". They make them laugh because they are silly books and easy to understand! The books selected are highly visual and have simple text which meet and fit the needs of my little special learners!
