Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever witnessed a child become overwhelmed by the noise of a fire alarm? Have you seen someone so frustrated that they throw an iPad across the room? My students are capable of amazing things however we need protection for their ears and our technology. My students are special to me. They are students with autism. My students attend a school in an area of high poverty. My students lack the resources that more affluent students might have access to. My students are amazing. Despite the odds, they come to school each day and do their best to accomplish new tasks and goals. My students are at varying ability levels. My students learn and care for themselves through images. My students are able to communicate their ideas through creating pictures and/or looking up images from the computer even when they don't have verbal skills.
My students often come to school tired and upset because they have not slept.
My students often grow frustrated and can even become angry due to their lack of ability (disability) to communicate effectively.
My Project
My students suffer from sensitivities to loud noises and have a tendency to throw tantrums. When we have our mandatory fire drills each month, or when another student at the school pulls the fire alarm, my students freak out. They may refuse to leave, throw a tantrum or run away due to over-stimulation from the sound. The headphones would allow my students to get through the fire drills and other loud situations, such as, assemblies without becoming overwhelmed.
My students do not know how to express when they are upset, overstimulated, frustrated or even happy.
When they become overwhelmed with emotion while using our class iPads, they throw the iPads across the room. The covers would protect the iPads from getting broken, thus allowing my students to continue to have access to technology.
