My students are part of a regional program for elementary students with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities. I want to give my students every opportunity to be successful. Reading is one area in which my students can gain skills to keep them entertained and learning through their lifetime. As a new teacher I have inherited a rag-tag set of books years out of date. Covid-19 restrictions have prevented me from growing my class library through used-book donations. These amazing kids deserve to have classroom books that are new, engaging, and age-appropriate. My students are eager to learn about animation, black mamba snakes, foods from world cultures, and different kinds of swimming pools. Please help them explore the world between the covers of great books at their specific reading levels!
My Project
Students in elementary school learn to read for pleasure and for information. My special education students with Autism and intellectual disabilities are no different than their general education peers in this regard. Our school media center has a shelf of books withdrawn from general circulation from which my students can choose. Our classroom library needs to join the 21st century to reflect my students' interests and abilities and to give them new books to help show how important their reading is to myself and my school.
Students with Autism and intellectual disabilities have to be personally engaged in the subject matter in order to learn.
Teaching reading will move beyond the classroom for my students. Updating my classroom library with new books at varying levels will allow my students to move through guided reading in the classroom, to reading at home with family help, and finally to experiencing the success of reading to themselves!
I will be able to to collect personalized progress data for my students. I can give them motivation to read by presenting new and exciting titles to them.
