This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a Resource Room teacher for children on the Autism Spectrum. The students are included in general education classes for at least half of the day. They are in first through fourth grade . The other part of the day they are in the classroom with me working on math, reading, comprehension, speech, behavior or social skills. These students have shown much success being in a self contained classroom for children with ASD and now, they can be General Education students with support from myself, a Special Educator with certification in Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as Cognitive Impairments.
The skills that are most important for the students to learn are how to participate appropriately as part of the General Education population.
Since the students struggle with social skills, not being able to "read" situations, I spend time teaching them when to get involved and when to avoid conflict. Many of the students also have sensory disorders, communication disorders, ADHD and anxiety and other diagnosis along with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Although the students are faced with challenges, they always try their best to make others feel special. They are kindhearted students who deserve the very best.
My Project
The materials that I requested are useful in teaching the students how to organize themselves, without needing support from others. When the students are able to color code their environment, they learn how to navigate their surroundings. They will be able to learn independence. I am also requesting for them, materials which will help them academically function at the same level as their peers. The workbooks are adaptable for every student in my class, regardless of their functioning level. Each student will be able to enter the General Education classroom with work that is complementary to the work the other students are completing. I believe the workbooks will be very helpful.
