The Humanities can be a rough topic to teach, especially in the high need, at-risk, low income community in which my school services in the state of NY. Children often come from families and communities where education is not valued as much as it should, and the product is a student body lacking in initiative and desire to learn. Currently our school is fighting to raise our 4-year graduation rate from below 50%, testing and developing new methods of instruction and delivery, but the statistics are staggering.
I currently teach in a very large metropolitan comprehensive school - there are over 4,100 registered students, many of whom will not statistically make it through without steps toward intervention. Our school is currently facing a budget shortfall of over 3 million dollars, so supplies are scarce and little money is available for extra equipment. Resources like these will make learning enjoyable to these at-risk students so that they can take that love of learning with them throughout high school and into college.
Your support will help me to deliver instruction in the differentiated and engaging way that is necessary for today's urban at-risk youth. Video camera's inconjunction with other donated equipment (projector, computers with video editing software) will make my class room a multimedia experience for all my classes. Student interviews and studies in psych, field trip videos of NY museums and monuments, etc. Class will be alive.
We are the change we are looking for. The children of my district need your support. You and your support will help my students to pass their classes, their exams, and lastly move on and succeed at the collegiate level.
