My students need high-interest and age-appropriate books, inspirational books that foster creativity and perseverance for read-alouds, and comfortable seating to enjoy the experience of reading and listening.
Each morning, I begin the day welcoming 16 bright, smiling, and eager students into my kindergarten class. They come from a variety of backgrounds, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses, coming together to create a diverse classroom community where we learn something new from each other each day!
My students are kind, creative, and eager to learn.
They love to practice the things they're good at, but even more so love a challenge! Their eyes light up when presented with one, their attention focused and their brains fully engaged. I try to foster a can-do, try-try-again attitude when it comes to "the tricky stuff."
Reading is a crucial skill for children in school and beyond. It is critical for them to have access to reading materials that are both age-appropriate and interesting to them. For some students, school is the only place they have access to books. Because of this, it is important for teachers like me to have a well-stocked classroom library.
Because it is my first year teaching first grade after previously teaching Kindergarten, I want to make sure I have a wide range of reading materials available for students of all reading levels.
For this project, the stools, ottomans, and couch will help me create a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere in my classroom where children can read or listen to a good book. I've chosen books from the "I Can Read" series ranging from the phonics level to level 3, as well as classic beloved chapter books such as "Ramona, the Brave." The varied levels containing popular characters such as Pete the Cat, Pinkalicious, and Super Heroes such as Superman and Wonder Woman will give students many options when it comes to picking out books to read. Read-aloud books like "What Do You Do with A Problem" and "The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes" will hopefully inspire students to keep a can-do attitude when things get tough - not just in literacy, but for every new challenge they will face!
