This is a project that will encourage 7th grade students to take more of an interest in developing their reading, thinking, and comprehension skills. This project will involve choosing books that are of interest to the student, reading the book, and taking a computerized comprehension test. Some students will be allowed to do an oral book report. This will depend on the needs of the child and test availability.
The ultimate goal of this project is to help students develop a love for reading. The students often complain about the books available to them in our school. I hope to get books in my classroom that are of interest to a 7th grade student.
The novels and other reading material that I receive from this grant will be stored in my classroom where the students can have easy access to them. They will be able to read during their Sustained Silent Reading time each day, during free time, and when they finish an assignment. Every year my new students will have access to the books in my reading corner.
Our students live in a rural community where over half of the students receive free and reduced lunch. The majority of the community is composed of primarily nurseries, farms, and ranches. This project will involve about 100 7th grade students of Folsom Jr. High.
