It's hard to read a book in English when you know only Spanish. All of our students are eager to read and just need something to fill the gap as they learn English. We want to have books that are a good fit for all our students.
We are a K - 8 school of about 500 students in Washington state; over half of our students come from non-English speaking homes.
They are all excited to read and want to check out books every week from the school library. Each week the classes all come to the library for book check-out time.
My Project
I am requesting Spanish fiction and non-fiction books for our third and fourth graders. These books have large, beautiful pictures of holidays, folk tales, and character-building scenes. They will fill a current gap in our library collection as we have very little to offer a new student who does not speak or read English. With these fresh additions to the library, I will be able to point all our eager readers to delightful books to spark their curiosity and engage them in reading. The students will learn that books can be an adventure and explain the world to them.
Just this past week a new fourth grade Spanish-speaking girl came to the library with her class.
All her classmates readily found an exciting book to check out -- a book they could read in their own language. We just didn't have much for this girl to choose from. It is imperative that our library meet the needs of this girl and others just like her. By helping our school with this project, you will help this student find a book to read and many other similar students will too.
