My students love Latin and learning about ancient Greeks and Romans! Our school is a Chicago Public School where all students begin studying Latin in kindergarten and more advanced Latin I coursework in grade three. We are located in a diverse neighborhood, but students are bused in from all over the city. A tiny school of ten classrooms, we make the most of all our resources! Students come to school every day eager to learn and grow!
My Project
A class set of the newest edition of the Cambridge Latin Course will provide my students with high-quality Latin reading opportunities and an introduction to the culture and daily life of ancient Rome and Pompeii. My students love our current textbook, Ecce Romani (the 1995 edition!) and it helps me inspire them to be eager word detectives and confident readers of Latin. However, it fails to provide an in-depth, systematic introduction to Roman culture, and does not offer sufficient Latin-language stories to help them practice their reading skills. This summer I was privileged to attend a three day workshop, fully funded by the Cambridge University Press, which trained me in the Cambridge method of teaching reading. Unfortunately, the budgetary crisis in Illinois and the Chicago Public Schools precludes any new curricular adoptions.
A class set of Unit I will enable me to integrate Cambridge Latin into my current curriculum for additional exposure to quality Latin text, differentiation, enrichment, and remediation.
I will also provide my Certamen team with access to the books for increased cultural and historical expertise.
