Middle School is hard enough. Hormones are flying, classes are harder, and there is more pressure to be successful. 6th graders are just starting middle school and the chaos of switching classes and meeting new friends can feel overwhelming.
Now imagine that you are a 6th grader who reads at a 2nd grade level.
Or imagine that you are a sixth grader who reads at a High School level and you cannot find anything interesting to read on the book shelf. These are just more factors that adds stress to everyday life. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. A third of our school community comes from low-income families. Students come to our school from a variety of cultures and speak multiple languages. Students walk into my classroom at all different ability and interest levels.
In today's society, students are often hyper-aware of these differences. I aim to help students discover their commonalities, while still allowing them to learn from each other's differences. The goal of my Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum is to foster empathy through content.
My Project
For this project, my students were totally in control! They have been begging since the beginning of the school year to help put together a Donors Choose project made up of books they LOVE, and that project is finally here. Each student chose a book (or books!) that they cherished and wanted the rest of the class to be able to enjoy as well. They just kept coming up with more and more books to add to the list!
Imagine having a reading list chosen especially for you.
That's what my students have created for themselves and future 6th graders. Even my most reluctant readers cannot wait to get their hands on these books picked just for them! Seeing how excited my students were to share these titles with each other has been inspiring. They have such a love of reading, and watching them sink into a good book is always a bright spot in my day. I fully expect to have a classroom of students pleading for extended independent reading time on the day these books arrive!
