Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I school in a low socioeconomic neighborhood, and 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many parents work two jobs and are barely able to support the family.
I have a bunch of awesome students who can't wait to come to school every day!
All my students are English language learners with no resources available at home. They often come to school without the supplies needed to be successful. Our school is a safe place for many of my students where learning is a priority.
My Project
My students have been learning about money so they can be financially literate. To promote financial literacy, my students earn money for coming to school, bring their homework, displaying good behavior, and following school rules. At the end of each month, I open our class store for students to buy things with their play money. There are many teachers at our school who also reward students with play money. Instead of just operating in our individual classes, why not have a school wide store?
For our next challenge, I want to give my students the opportunity to actually start their own business at school.
We will start our school store for all students to buy school supplies and snacks. My students will have the opportunity to be involved in the money decision making and the overall organization of how the school store will work. They may come in before school, stay after school, or use part of their recess time to work for the store. But first, we will need two canopy tents to set up for our school store. This will be the start of our business endeavors.
