I teach in a selective enrollment high school wherein about 60% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch and 100% of the students are exceptionally talented and motivated to learn. The student body is diverse and they come from all over Chicago to get to our school. Once they're here, they ask great questions, eagerly absorb new information about their world, and rise to rigorous challenges every day.
And that's one of my favorite aspects of teaching at my school: my students are goal-driven and *ask* for challenges so they can meet their goals.
Students have told me that they take Spanish class to be able to speak with their family members, neighbors, or friends in Spanish. They dream of traveling the world and our city so they can use the language to connect to different communities. They're eager to acquire more language and apply that language in meaningful contexts.
I hope to use this platform to support my students as they learn Spanish in and out of my classroom.
My Project
What's cooler than reading books in Spanish? Having students write and publish their own books in Spanish! For an end-of-year project, I'm gathering the materials necessary for students to feel the ultimate sense of accomplishment as they write illustrate, and publish their own books in Spanish.
This project is a culmination of the year my students have spent immersed in Spanish stories: now it's time for them to write their own!
My classes have built silly stories together, they've learned about true stories from the target culture, and we've shared stories from our every day lives. They've also spent hours reading stories in the books that make up our classroom library. But for the final project, students will work in pairs to think up, draft, edit, type up, and illustrate their own stories to demonstrate all that they've learned this year.
Having the right materials to preserve these student-created storybooks means that, by the end of this project, we will have about 80 storybooks in all that will become part of our classroom library and serve as reading material for hundreds of students for years to come! Please help me supply my students with the sheet protectors to keep their work clean, the flare pens to make their illustrations pop, and the report covers to give their stories a polished look in their final form.
