My students need Scholastic magazines in order to have access to a wide variety of high interest texts that will increase their reading skills while they learn about science, technology, history, and much more!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students live and attend school in a low income/high poverty community where they face unique challenges both inside and outside of the classroom everyday. In the face of these challenges, my students walk into our classroom each day knowing they are valued and there is value in education.
My students are excited each day to experience engaging, meaningful learning that can help create future opportunities for success.
Most of my students are being raised in single parent households and all of my students receive breakfast and lunch at no cost based on their family's economic status. Many are living in a world where they face hardships early on in life. Despite these hardships, my students have endless potential. As their teacher I strive to focus on their growth in order to inspire my students to use their potential and become lifelong learners.
It is important that my students increase their comprehension when reading. In order to do this I believe they must learn not only to read words, but learn that reading is interesting, fun, and purposeful. Learning the joy of reading will help them become lifelong readers and learners. Giving my students access to Scholastic magazines will provide them with authentic, purposeful reading opportunities to practice the reading strategies taught in class. Students will be more likely to engage in reading because Scholastic magazines highlight cross-curricular topics of interest such as science, technology, and history.
My goal is to increase my students comprehension when reading by using Scholastic magazines to provide them with grade level appropriate texts that will cover a variety of high interest topics while exposing them to various genres and current events.
These magazines will help to supplement the reading instruction already taking place each day. Scholastic's add-on's, Science Spin and Geography Spin, will help connect my students to a world outside of their own. My students will be excited to read their own colorful copy of the magazine as opposed to looking at one book as a class or a black and white copy of a text. As their teacher I know this will increase their interest, engagement, and ultimately their comprehension.
