Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Those who don't know my students might say that they will not amount to much, but I know different. My AVID students are motivated and driven individuals who have already decided that college is the place for them. Our school is in a low income area, and we have a high population of English learners. In our AVID classes we learn about what it takes to get into college and teach students how to be successful in high school and in college.
Every year, our junior class takes a trip to visit colleges during a three day period. As part of this planning, I ask students to reflect in their journals on what it is going to take to get them on the trip and into a college in the future. During these reflections, students see that it takes planning and preparation to be eligible to go on the trip and eligible for college. Our district is in a budget freeze at the moment, and consequently I cannot order any new supplies.
I need 100 journals for my students to share, reflect on and document their experiences. The focus of this writing will be geared towards honest introspection related to the students' desire to make a commitment to taking their lives seriously and pursuing higher education.
With your help, my students will empower themselves and each other with their words. They will remember writing in their journals and appreciate the time that they had to reflect, set goals and celebrate successes. This writing will encourage them to continue on to college.
