Help me give my students books that they can see themselves, representing three cultures in my classroom that are not represented in the literature of the classroom.
My students are an amazing bunch of artistic and creative learners who approach each day with enthusiasm. They are dynamic and use their creativity to approach learning tasks from a variety of angles.
These learners come from a background of poverty and disadvantage.
All of them receive free breakfast and lunch every day. Many students get food to bring home every Friday and every other Friday, the food bank delivers fresh produce for all students to bring home as well. Our after school program provides dinner for students three days a week.
Many students in my classroom are resettled refugees whose parents have had limited education. Many are learning English in the context of our school. This years class has over 60% of the students being ELL students. Many of these children are newcomers and still learning basic skills like the alphabet, letter sound matching as well as numbers and counting.
My Project
Working in a minority majority school I am fortunate to teach students who represent many nationalities.
My students need books that are inviting and represent a broader context.
They need books with interesting topics, pictures and language. They need to have books that they can see themselves in. My classroom library is outdated and in need of an overhaul. New books that showcase who they are would make a huge difference.
Funding these books for children in my classroom will allow them to access language, rich texts as well as have new texts to partner read and share.
Students in my class are eager to read and share books, however many of the texts I have to offer are outdated or showcase only white people.
In a classroom of students who are learning English I want to be able to provide new books that meet their needs. Bilingual dictionaries and texts will support their literacy.
