My students need more books to fill the shelves of our classroom library. We are working to build a culture of reading, and these book series and individual titles are all student requests!
We live in a small, rural community, and 40% of high school families qualify for free/reduced lunch. We are also located in a community that does not have a public library, so classroom libraries are essential.
These public school realities can sometimes limit access to high-interest reading material.
Every year I spend my limited classroom budget on fiction and nonfiction reading choices for my high school students. It is working! Students have been asking for more and more titles. The student picks are as varied as the students themselves. I would love to be able to provide these high-interest choices to my students.
My Project
My high school students are asking for books! Their requests are a mix of nonfiction and fiction books and include everything from the new Black Panther series to sci-fi thrillers. These titles will be added to our classroom library. We are creating a culture of reading and self-selection is a major component of keeping students reading. If we can keep students engaged in reading throughout high school, we can create adult readers. These books will be available for all high school students for independent reading and for classroom use in Advanced Lit, English 9, English 10, and Lit and Comp. Additionally, students have sustained silent reading every week, and they are always looking for engaging material to read.
