My students need interactive, motivating CDs to practice phonemic awareness, math and science skills and building positive self-esteem. We also need a CD storage Pocket Chart.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
How many times have we heard, "If you know the words to this song, why don't you know your alphabet, or math facts?" So lets give them what they WANT [music and movement] and NEED [practice and repetition], making this a win-win situation.
We are a Title I public school that strives to develop young critical thinkers from pre-K to grade five who will be effective, productive citizens, through interactive, hands-on learning, community and parental support and teacher preparation.
As for my second graders, they are curious, intuitive and active who LOVE learning using their different modalities.
My Project
I just attended a Literacy Academy workshop and was introduced to a Jack Hartman music CD entitled "Hip, Hop AlphaBop." I enjoyed learning about words that rhyme while using hand movements which had me thinking about my struggling second graders. Their low self-esteem need a boost and the resources for this project would provide them a choice of CDs teaching about phonemic awareness, math, science and feeling better about who you are through song and movement. "Music is a magical gift we must nourish and cultivate in our children, especially now as scientific evidence proves that an education in the arts makes better math and science students, enhances spatial intelligence in newborns, and let's not forget that the arts are a compelling solution to teen violence, certainly not the cause of it!" Michael Greene, Recording Academy President and CEO at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards, February 2000.
The resources would make a difference in my students because they can sing their way to success!
I can imagine students reciting the tunes in their head while taking a test. I can also visualize parents asking, "what song is my child singing? But whatever it is, its working!" Now, parents will not mind their child singing especially when they see improvement in the attitude and academics.
