Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a small, fully inclusive charter school, where almost seventy percent of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch. I work with students who are labeled in many ways: ELL, LD, ID, BIP, IEP, SLP, apraxic, autistic, ADD, ADHD, ODD, and the list goes on. I'm working to help students remove their labels and find their feet, as well as their voices.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but one thing they have in common is their thirst for creative learning opportunities.
My Project
Lab coats, medical props, surgical caps, wigs, eyewear, construction hats, and not pads all se the stage for my students to demonstrate math deconstruction, grammar surgeries, and reader's theater.
This project will put students on stage.
These resources will allow my class of third graders to become the scientists they've researched or dress as the character, complete with setting, as we put on a reader's theater event for parent night. Props and costumes are never in the budget. This project is full of drama. When students dress the part, they live the part, they can become a different character and really shine. This type of project enables confidence and builds on many strengths such as fluency, memory, and all around motor skills. Drama is another path some students may miss out on. This project puts the drama back into the classroom.
