My high school students are such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. I teach special education and coach at a Title 1, inner-city school. Our students are truly special. They are part of an inclusive school that embraces diversity. They challenge themselves by being a part of a Naval JROTC program. Some of the students are learning to read and write, while some of their classmates are learning social skills, emotional skills, or making huge strides to become the first in their family to graduate high school. Each class is unique but they all find ways to relate. They love to help each other, read historical fiction, write poetry, and learn new games.
In our classroom, we created a family.
We celebrate who we are as individuals and come together because of shared goals, dreams, and experiences. Each student has their own story and challenge, yet never gives up. As my specific students make gains in our classroom, they have the opportunity to spend more time in the general education setting. Our classroom is all about building each other up, while we build our skills. We all learn from each other everyday, myself included!
My Project
Flexible seating will allow my students to be themselves without getting in the way of their own goals or other’s learning. As we are part of NJROTC, our students are learning leadership skills and serving the community, along with being a high school student. Our kiddos that need accommodations and modifications will benefit from flexible seating.
This option allows students to choose from various types of seats in the classroom, including both traditional desks, tables, and chairs and soft seating like couches and beanbags.
By introducing flexible seating, teachers change the learning environment, making it less clinical and more student-friendly.
