We come from a public high school on the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii.
My students are all amazing people who come from all different backgrounds. Many of my students are first generation or grew up in different countries. Many of my students are English Language Learners and the majority of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Despite this, my students are cheerful and grateful for what they have. When we were looking at income charts in class, they seem generally confused that their family's income means they must be "poor." I'm inspired everyday by the
I have students from the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, Samoa, and Tonga as well as native Hawaiian students. Sitting still and working independently may work well for a lot of students from Western cultures, but my students need collaboration and hands-on learning. I think the reason this type of learning works best for them is because being warm, social, and supportive to others is such a fundamental part of our local culture.
My Project
For our classroom, I want my students to have large whiteboards, markers, and erasers so they can work in groups and create earthly-friendly "posters." With these large whiteboards, different students can write on the board at the same time, work through problems together, communicate, collaborate, and learn from each other. These large boards will also make it easy for students to present to the class.
My students, especially my English Language Learns and my students from non-Western cultures, learn best through collaboration and teamwork.
This resource would really benefit our class because it would facilitate the process of student-led learning and teaching.
