Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse group of children who are inquisitive, passionate about learning, and motivated to succeed. They come to school every day excited about learning. They are also very proud of their accomplishments.
I teach in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in San Diego.
One hundred percent of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students are English language learners. However, they make great progress every year. Every spring, my school has a heart-warming celebration to honor those children who have become fluent English speakers. Parents decorate the auditorium, students give moving speeches, prominent people of San Diego say some motivating words, and there is never a dry eye in the audience.
My Project
Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis is an engaging and inspiring novel. It is set in 1939 and is about a ten year old orphan boy who goes on a quest to find his father. He learns about family and friendship along the way. I read this novel every year to my students. We laugh and cry together. It is an amazing experience that I look forward to every year. However, I only have a few copies of the book.
The reading experience would be so much more enriching if each student could read from his/her own book.
Usually I just read aloud the book to the class while the students just sit and listen. With a class set of books, the children will be able to follow along and read it as well. This will help their overall engagement and comprehension of the text. They will also be able to read it aloud with a partner which will help improve their reading fluency. In addition, they will be able to reread certain parts of the text to complete critical thinking activities to help improve their comprehension.
