Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Many of my students are special education students in a math inclusion classroom. At times, because of their learning disabilities, they face challenges but with constant encouragement from myself, the classroom teacher, as well as their peers, I have seen them make tremendous growth, and even when things are difficult for them, they persevere.

Students with learning disabilities deserve a chance to succeed in school using whatever modality it takes to help them reach for the stars.

I work with students in grades 4 to 7 and spend 45 to 90 minutes a day in each class reinforcing and reteaching what the class is learning. At times, it is difficult because the students have many stumbling blocks, such as problems processing information, short retention of information, language delays, low cognitive abilities, trouble retrieving information previously learned, just to name a few. However, they never cease to amaze me when they don't give up, and we come up with a different way to work through a problem.

The benefit of having an inclusion teacher in the room is that not only students with learning disabilities, but all students, benefit from having two teachers in a room.

My Project

Most of my students started the year off with headphones with microphones that parents were asked to buy with the class supplies list. However, some students never brought them in either because the parents did not have a chance or they could not afford them. To get these students headphones, my co-teacher and I spent our own money at first to get them, so every child had their own because we needed to be careful about spreading Covid. Then, we did a Donors Choose and thankfully got some for the remaining students who needed. Now however, it is January and some students broke or misplaced theirs and others brought them home when we were virtual the past two weeks and no longer have them. Teaching students with computers is very hard when students don't have headphones and they not only need headphones but they also need microphones which are more expensive. We asked parents to send in replacements and unfortunately, many parents have not sent in and therefore, the students are suffering. We also no longer have spares to lend the students so we have a problem.

By giving my students new headphones with microphones, you are ensuring that they will have a successful way of learning online with the materials that they need.

More and more, students are using computers to learn online during independent work so teachers can work in small groups to help students bridge the gaps that happened because students were remote for 18 months. My students want to learn, but need the proper materials to learn. I am also requesting bags to put the microphones into so that students can go to the cubicles, get their bag with their name on it which contains their headphones and begin working.
