My students need clay and glaze to participate in an after-school ceramics program where they will learn both hand building and wheel throwing techniques.
Students beg me each day to use the potters wheel! We have 8 in our school but are unable to spend time with each student working on the wheel during a 40 minute art class. I have developed an after school ceramics program for students but do not have enough clay and glaze to continue the program.
My students attend a large (nearly 1,000) public school in New York.
They are in 6, 7, & 8th grades (ages 11-14). They come from a diverse variety of background and ethnicities. Many students do not have the opportunity to attend art classes outside of school and have requested a ceramics club so they can learn about sculpture and clay after school without any cost to them. In addition, students take art for only half of the year in 6th and 7th grade. Students do not take art in 8th grade. This program will provide ALL INTERESTED STUDENTS the opportunity to create two works of art even if they cannot take art classes during the regular school day.
My Project
I am requesting 4 boxes of clay and a set of glazes. With these resources, students will not only learn how to create ceramic sculptures, but will learn creative-problem solving skills while expressing their ideas visually through the arts. Each of the 80 students enrolled in the club will use the clay and glazes to create two sculptures: one hand-built sculpture and one wheel thrown sculpture created on the potter's wheel! Each project will be fired in a kiln and glazed.
This project is important because it allows students to learn how to use the potter's wheel and create ceramic sculptures that they would not otherwise be able to make.
Many private art programs cost hundreds of dollars that students cannot afford. Our after school ceramics program will allow all interested student the opportunity to express themselves through the art while learning creative problem-solving skills without any cost to the student.
