Students Need a Vote! California Young Readers Medal Books 2018-19
My students need copies of the books nominated for the California Young Reader Medal in the elementary categories so that they can read them and participate in the voting.
We are a magnet fundamental elementary school and our students come from all over our city giving us a very diverse population. Nearly 700 students come through our library each week. Kindergarten through sixth grade all have time to hear stories, learn and check out books.
They have an enormous appetite for books and read almost anything they can get their hands on.
Our students are very eager and have a desire to succeed. They work hard to do their best at school and are learning to be great caring people.
Books can teach us so much about everything. Many of the stories we read aloud have morals that teach us how to be a better person and life lessons.
My Project
My students need copies of the books nominated for the California Young Reader Medal in all the elementary categories. We will read the picture books aloud in the library as well as available for check out. The chapter books will be available for check out throughout the school year so students may read them at their own pace. In the spring once the students have had the opportunity to read all the books, we will have elections and submit the results to the California Young Readers Association.
Students are so exited to be allowed to vote and have a say in the whole process, allowing only children to vote for the winner it is something that belongs to them.
It will encourage more reading so that they can make an informed decision. This also exposes students to books they may not have picked on their own.
