My students need a leveled classroom library. The leveled library will be able to better meet the needs of my class that has a huge range of reading levels.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students of our school are in first grade and many will be the first people in their family to attend and graduate from college. Many of our students do not have regular and easy access to books and other print materials, and have limited vocabulary.
The students of our school are learning how to read!
They are coming from kindergarten where they learned their letter names, sounds, and sight words. At our school, we will be putting all these foundational skills together and move them up all the way to and beyond reading level I. They enjoy cheering out our sight words and dancing, and because many students in my class have been in school together since pre-school, they see each other as a family.
My Project
Do you remember getting hooked onto your favorite children's book author? Beverly Cleary, Roald Dahl, Nancy Drew, JK Rowling, Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss, Tomie DePaola? I still remember dashing towards the Roald Dahl section of the Children's Library, and then going through a Beverly Cleary phase because I was able to relate to Beezus. I want my students to enjoy this love of reading as well, and we need actual books to make this happen. A leveled library will help students choose books at a difficulty that is right for them. They are coming from kindergarten where they learned their letter names, sounds, and sight words. At our school we will be putting all these foundational skills together and move them up all the way to and beyond reading level I.
Our students are going to graduate from college and this year we will continue to build upon their reading , comprehension, writing, and oral language skills.
Many of our students do not have the cultural and language exposure that students from higher incomes typically have, so our books will give us this opportunity to grow our brains and expand our experiences. Through these books we will be able to learn about our world beyond Washington DC and how we can be responsible citizens.
