My students need Chromebooks to do all things that will make them successful citizens in the 21st century, even more so due to our geographically remote location.
My students are living and learning in rural Western Alaska. It is a 100% Native Alaskan student population. They are inquisitive, enthusiastic, and have a yearning to learn. However, due to our geographic location, it can be difficult to access supplies and materials. Also, our school attempts to provide all materials (pencils, notebooks, tissues, etc.) for learning, so as to not be a burden on our families. Of course, our funds can never cover all that students need.
Most teachers will tell you that their students teach them each day; I can confidently say that my students truly give me more than I can hope to give them.
I am always learning. In a given day I might be learning new words in my adopted village's language, lessons that were given to my students from the elders, ways of living a subsistence lifestyle, or hacks for living when electricity, sewage, cell towers, and internet are all down, simultaneously.
My Project
I am asking for Chromebooks to give my 2nd grade students access to the larger world. This gift will also give my students the opportunity to practice and hone their skills, in anticipation of computerized state testing that starts in their 3rd grade year.
People often say we are on top of the world in the Arctic Circle, but the top can sometimes be an isolating place and this project will help bring the larger world to them.
We will be able to see faraway places and take "trips" that would not be possible in any other way.
By donating to the project you will bring wonder and awe to my students' world. They might walk down a city street or view a tree for the first time! They will gain skills in technology literacy and it may help to foster an interest and passion for new technology.
