My Students

My students are 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls and boys who are labeled as having emotional/behavioral disabilities. These students have had difficulties adapting their behavior to school routines and expectations. They tend to have a negative relationship with traditional school work. Hands-on projects are a favorite way of learning in my class. My students stay engaged and learn to work cooperatively when working on projects.

My classroom is designed to create a warm, motivating, and positive atmosphere for students who have some of the biggest difficulties fitting into a traditional school model.

Students receive rewards and motivators to help learn new and positive behaviors. These types of rewards are often tangible things such as community trips, gum, ear phones, and other types of gear a typical middle school kid is motivated to earn.

My school is located near Bellingham, Washington. We serve a diverse population including many Native American students from local tribes such as Lummi Nation and the Nooksack. These students are represented in my classroom. Many, although not all, of my students have been through difficult childhood experiences. They are a hard-working, resilient crew of kids and I love working with them!

My Project

My class operates a school store where we sell school supplies, sugar free gum, ear buds and other things of interest and use to middle school students. All our inventory has been donated and we use the money earned to provide incentives, celebrations and experiences for our class. A student in my class came up with the idea to make things to sell in our store. His classmates were excited about this and the kids researched different things we could make such as fidgets and bracelets. We decided to make bike chain ring fidgets. The chain tools will be used to take the chains apart and connect the links to the key rings to create the fidgets. It takes fine motor skill and patience to do these tasks.

Manufacturing an item for our store will give my students an opportunity for a hands on project that will benefit them socially, emotionally and academically.

The students will work together to plan and execute the creation of the fidgets. They have already done research to determine what they believe is the best product to start with, used math to measure and figure out what supplies we need, and are practicing their social skills by working together to discuss how to turn the plan into action. They will practice patience and dealing with frustration as they use the tools to create the products.
