This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are entering sixth grade and are experiencing all the changes that "Middle School" and early adolescence. Additionally, my students live in the "Back of the Years" neighborhood which has many challenges. Many parents work several jobs to provide for basic needs. Job insecurity is a an issue for many families. Routinely, students are displaced from their homes due to economic situations. There is the presence of gangs which provides its own challenges. Most students are familiar with someone who has died due to a gang death. The overriding goal for most of the students, as well as their families, is for them to be successful in school so that they are able to pursue a career and support themselves when they are adults.

My Project

The book entitled "Real Kids, Real Stories, Real Change," will empower students. The children portrayed in this book have many challenges comparable or worse than the life situation of my students. These children find ways to confront the challenges that they must face in their lives. Students will meet other "truly amazing kids" who have faced obstacles and won battles.

This book contains 30 stories about children taking actions to improve their lives or the lives of others. These stories demonstrate the power of the voices and actions of children.
